Director of Engineering


Who are we?

Tempest (formerly known as Hip Sobriety) provides alcohol abuse treatment for the 46 million Americans who don’t identify as addicted. We are building the next generation of recovery care: a meticulously designed brand and media presence which positions sobriety as an aspirational lifestyle choice and an online educational platform to help achieve it.

The current product is an 8-week ed-tech/digital therapy/online community that is a blend of online resources and instructor-led online sessions. At this point, 1,400 participants have been through the beta course with a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of approximately 80. We are launching a multi-contributor editorial platform, The Temper, in late fall 2018.

We serve a customer currently ignored by the wellness, healthcare and recovery industries; deliver them to sobriety; and keep them engaged in an evolutionary pursuit at a fraction of the cost of traditional for profit treatment modalities. Tempest was founded in 2014 and is backed by Slow Ventures, Refactor, Female Founders Fund, and Red Light Management.

Job Description.

We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead the development and future iteration of our current product platform and feature set, including but not limited to our admissions and intake process as well as our custom platform for hosting our participants’ educational and social experience.

This person will be joining the team as the first engineering hire and will provide technical guidance to the organization and grow and develop our engineering team.

This person needs to know how to collaborate and communicate with non-technical team members and take ideas and input and turn them into reality. The right person will enter our fast-paced environment and quickly build strong relationships with the team. This person will also be the technical liaison with any external digital agencies we are working with and will be responsible for overseeing any takeover of deliverables.  

We are looking for this person to be the technical partner and leader to the product team who will take a strong sense of ownership over all technical aspects of the Tempest organization. This is a full-time role based out of our New York headquarters.

The Team.

We are growing a small product team that will include a product manager, product designer, instructional designers, and engineers. Because of our tech-enabled product, you will be collaborating with a group of experts ranging from operations, design, curriculum development, engineering and marketing. Your role will be to leverage this group to build a thoughtful and engaging experience on our platform for our users. The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of influential leadership, working cross functionally, and building technical education and/or healthtech products.

Role responsibilities.

  • You’ll partner with our product managers and design team to define technical requirements, consult on prioritization of platform features, and build and refine new features.

  • You’ll work hands-on with product managers in executing the product plan, from prioritizing and grooming the backlog to tracking releases.

  • You’ll be a master of focus, skillfully defining the MVPs to release incrementally, shipping early and often to test against real users.

  • You’ll coordinate and communicate across teams to maintain product and strategy alignment, driving product clarity and strategy in partnership with the broader org.

Qualifications (Who You Are).

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in software design, software development & architecture as in individual contributor

  • 3+ years of experience managing and running engineering teams with demonstrated skills in strategy, roadmapping, technical leadership, recruiting and hiring, and fostering a healthy engineering culture

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices

  • Experience in building content delivery systems for educational content

  • Experience working in a regulated industry such as healthcare a plus

  • Marketing engineering work + product engineer work experience

  • Strong focus on clean code and robust design with a focus on reusability and iteration

  • Excellent Ruby on Rails experience

  • Experience with Rails as an API

  • Strong familiarity with React, Angular or Vue

  • Working knowledge of front end technologies and design patterns

  • Experience in relational databases, data modeling, and performance

  • Familiarity with how servers, load balancers, and routing works in the internet

  • Heroku and AWS technologies experience

  • Experience with CRM integrations, e.g., Salesforce, Hubspot, etc

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, as well as clear documentation skills
